Aims of the project
Developed from ideas put forward by the Young
Southwark Partnership, this project aims to generate
and promote work experience and part time work
opportunities for young people in Southwark and the
City of London.
It will help them to earn some money while studying,
start to obtain some new life and work skills; raise
the profile of young people in the area and allow them
to be reliable, hard-working and committed employees.
Criteria for participants:
- Aged 16 or 17, still at school in Southwark or a resident of the City of London.
- Want to earn money, want to develop job skills and have a positive, customer-focused attitude.
How the project works
In week 1, the young people are asked to volunteer
their time (on a Saturday or Sunday) working in a
shop. The young people do not receive any payment
for the first week, but do receive a complementary
voucher of their choice (worth around £20).
In weeks 2 & 3, the young people get paid by Young
Southwark Works. During those 3 weeks, travel
expenses are paid and it’s down to the individual
young person to work hard and show the employer
they are worth retaining.
In advance of starting work, a half day of customer
service training will be offered to groups of 6-10
young people.
